Laura Baeza
Laura Baeza nació el 14 de junio de 1988 en Campeche, Campeche.
Su libro de cuentos Margaritas en la boca fue publicado por la editorial Simiente (Cuernavaca, 2012). En el 2017 ganó el Premio Nacional de Cuento Breve Julio Torri convocado por Tierra Adentro, con el libro Ensayo de orquesta (FETA, 2017) y el Premio Nacional de Narrativa Gerardo Cornejo, con el libro Época de cerezos. En 2018 fue seleccionada por la Feria Internacional de Guadalajara dentro del programa “Al ruedo: ocho talentos mexicanos”, como una de las propuestas narrativas para el futuro. Es antologadora de Mexicanas. Trece narrativas contemporáneas (Fondo Blanco, 2021). Su primera novela es Niebla ardiente (Alfaguara, 2021), y forma parte del Mapa de las Lenguas 2022. Fue finalista del VII Premio Ribera del Duero y del Premio Primera Novela 2022. Su libro más reciente es una colección de cuentos titulada Una grieta en la noche (Páginas de espuma, 2022)

Laura Baeza was born on June 14, 1988, in Campeche, Campeche.
Her collection of short stories Margaritas en la boca was published by the publishing house Simiente (Cuernavaca 2012). In 2017 she won the National Award for short story Julio Torri with the book Ensayo de orquesta (FETA 2017) and the National Narrative Award Gerardo Cornejo with Época de cerezos. In 2018 she was selected by the International Book Fair Guadalajara as part of "Al ruedo: ocho talentos mexicanos". Her first novel was published in 2021: Niebla Ardiente (Alfaguara), which has been selected to be pat of Mapa de las Lenguas 2022. She was shortlisted for the VII Ribera del Duero Prize, and for the First Novel Prize 2022. Her most recent book is a collection of short stories, Una grieta en la noche (Páginas de espuma, 2022).
Una grieta en la noche
Hay libros en los que es mejor no abrir una grieta en la noche. Este es uno de ellos. Asomarse puede ser caer al vacío, donde las familias no son espacios seguros, las calles acaban siendo un bucle, las pesadillas regresan para recordarnos por qué están aquí y ni siquiera los vínculos fraternales se conocen a profundidad. Asomarse es estar delante de una fabuladora extraordinaria, una revolución en la escritura mexicana, encendida por veladoras y pirotecnias, alimentada de golpes de boxeo y dentelladas felinas, poblada de desaparecidas, narco satánicos o amantes. Si leer es siempre precipitarse, leer a Laura Baeza es sumergirse al mismo tiempo en el vacío y en la oscuridad. Abrir una grieta bajo los pies.
There are books that are better not to open at night. This is one of them. To take a peek may imply falling into the abyss where families are not safe places, where the streets end up being a loop, where nightmares come back to remind us why they are here, and where not even fraternal bonds are known deeply. To take a peek is to stand in front of a fabulous fabulist, of a revolution in Mexican writing, lit up by candles and fireworks, that feeds on boxing punches and feline bites, inhabited by missing people, by satanic drug dealers or lovers. If reading is to rush into something, reading Laura Baeza is to submerge yourself at the same time into the void and into darkness; it is to open a crack beneath your feet.

Para Esther, el recuerdo de su infancia y juventud se reduce a la enfermedad mental padecida por su hermana, a los cuidados necesarios y a las precauciones siempre insuficientes. Luego, a su desaparición y asesinato. Entonces, ¿cómo es posible que en ese arranque de enero de 2013, en Barcelona, su figura se le aparezca en pantalla? ¿Cómo podría ser esa mujer, en medio de disturbios en la sierra hidalguense transmitidos por la televisión española, su hermana víctima de feminicidio?
Ya una vez Esther cruzó el Atlántico para escapar del dolor, de la pérdida y, sobre todo, de la culpa. Ahora hará el recorrido inverso para buscar la verdad que le fue arrebatada junto con la vida de Irene. ¿Es cierto que, como tantas, fue secuestrada y asesinada?
Niebla ardiente es una estremecedora novela que habla sobre la pérdida, el duelo, el amor, pero, sobre todo, la culpa y la necesidad de pedir perdón.

For Esther, the memories of her infancy and youth are reduced to the mental sickness her sister suffered from, the necessary care she needed and the always insufficient precautions that were set in order to protect her. Afterwards, Esther’s memories are about her sister’s disappearance and her murder. So, how is it possible that, in Barcelona, in the beginning of 2013 her sister’s figure appears on the tv screen? How can that woman be in the middle of disturbances in Hidalgo? How can her sister be transmitted on Spanish television, her sister a victim of feminicidio?
Esther has crossed the Atlantic before to escape from pain and loss and, but, above it all, guilt. Now she will have to make the journey the other way around in order to search for the truth that was taken from her, alongside Irene. Is it true that, as many others, she was kidnapped and murdered?
