Gabriela Riveros
Estudió la licenciatura en Letras Españolas en el Tecnológico de Monterrey, y la Maestría en Humanidades en la Universidad de Monterrey. Realizó cursos en La Sorbona de París, de literatura comparada y psicología en la Universidad de Harvard y en la Universidad Iberoamericana. Estudió música y piano en la Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey, INBA. Fue becaria del Centro de Escritores de Nuevo León 1994-1995, del FONCA 2001 y del EFCA 2018. Sus cuentos, ensayos, poemas y cuentos infantiles han obtenido más de una docena de premios nacionales e internacionales, y se han publicado en antologías y revistas de México, España, Argentina, Colombia, Alemania y Estados Unidos.
Autora del libro Tiempos de arcilla (1994). Su cuento «Ven por chile y sal» obtuvo el Premio Literario de la Deutsche Welle de Alemania 1995 y su libro de cuentos Ciudad mía (1998) el Premio Internacional Universidad Externado de Colombia. Autora de cuatro libros de literatura infantil: El encargo de Fernanda, Mi hermano Paco (Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil «Castillo de la Lectura» 2000 y 2001), Don Florencio de Polvorín (2009) y El secreto de los asteriscos (2011). Actualmente es profesora de Escritura Creativa en el Tecnológico de Monterrey. En 2019 publica la novela Destierros (Lumen) y el poemario En la orilla de las cosas (Vaso Roto, 2019). Su más reciente obra es Olvidarás el fuego (Lumen 2022)
Gabriela Riveros has a degree in Spanish Literature from Tecnológico de Monterrey and has a Master’s Degree in Humanities from the Universidad de Monterrey. She studied courses in Comparative Literature and Psychology (at Harvard University, La Sorbonne and at the Universidad Iberoamericana). Her literature has won more than a dozen national and international awards and has been published in anthologies and literary magazines in Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Germany and the United States.
Her book of stories Ciudad mía (1998) won the International Prize from the Universidad Externado de Colombia, and the story “Ven por chile y sal”, the Literary Prize of the Deutsche Welle of Germany 1995. She ventured into children’s literature with El encargo de Fernanda, Mi hermano Paco, Don Florencio de Polvorín and El secreto de los asteriscos. She is currently a Creative Writing professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey. In 2019 she published the novel Destierros (Lumen) and the poetry collection En la orilla de las cosas (Vaso Roto Publishing). Her most recent work is the novel titled Olvidarás el fuego (Lumen, 2022).

La historia silenciada a lo largo de cuatro siglos del éxodo sefardí de España y Portugal, y de los esfuerzos para sobrevivir a migraciones, epidemias, huracanes, guerras, intolerancia, torturas, intrigas políticas y traiciones es narrada de manera magistral por la pluma de Gabriela Riveros. The story of the Sephardi Jew’s exodus from Spain and Portugal —silenced across four centuries— and their struggle to survive migrations, epidemics, hurricanes, war, prejudice, torture, political intrigues, and betrayals superbly narrated by Gabriela Riveros’ expert voice. Olvidarás El Fuego (You Shall Forget the Fire) is the very first novel that chronicles this poignant story, the tragedy of the Carvajal lineage and the fate of their manuscripts and Memoirs, found in 2016 at an auction house in New York, after having been stolen from the National Archives.
Through vivid, flesh-and-blood characters, we will witness their heroic, underground resistance, the fight of both men and women, entire families who gave their lives for their right to freedom of thought, belief, and religion. From Europe to New Spain, from Africa to Asia, the protagonists guard an ancestral secret, all while they are besieged by a political context in which cultural diversity was not only considered a sin, but a crime against the Estate.
Destierros
Desde la oscuridad del desierto, una mujer rarámuri anuncia a Helena que su hija, desaparecida años atrás, regresará. Por otro lado, esa misma mañana Julia, absorta en una serie de destierros personales, sufre un accidente automovilístico sobre la carretera. Mientras su esposo recibe los restos de quien cree que es su mujer, Julia es escondida a la orilla de la carretera en un jacal. A partir de jirones de memoria, de un cuerpo que oscila entre la vida y la muerte, ella deambula inconsciente entre una serie de voces e historias que la conforman, de decisiones que distorsionaron el sentido de su vida. Por su parte, Helena encarna los destierros de la historia del siglo XX mexicano, sucesos que quedaron al margen de la historia oficial.
A través del delirante recuento de sus relatos, cobran vida cuatro generaciones de mujeres, las otras revoluciones mexicanas, los migrantes, la violencia, el país de los desaparecidos, la impunidad y la demencia. Destierros es un cruce de narrativas, pero también de esos otros cuerpos que somos nosotros. Gabriela Riveros nos sube a la barca con su estilo poético y su maravillosa pluma, para que recorramos nuestros propios exilios y geografías al lado de sus personajes.
In the darkness of the desert, a Rarámuri woman tells Helen that her daughter, who has been missing for years, will return. That same morning, Julia, preoccupied with a series of personal exiles, gets into a car accident on the highway: an event that unleashes the full force of the decisions warping her life, the shadows besieging her. While her husband receives some ashes in the way of her remains, Helena hides the battered body in a shack by the highway. Hovering between life and death, Julia wanders unconsciously through the holes in her memory, the voices and stories that make her who she is. Helena embodies the exiles of Mexico’s twentieth century history, the events on the periphery of the official narrative.
Through a delirious account of these occurrences, four generations of women—the overlooked branch of the family tree—come to life. So do the other Mexican revolutions, the exodus from the countryside to the city, migrants and the American dream, abandonment, the femicides in Ciudad Juárez, violence, the country of the missing, impunity, oblivion. An ancient secret runs through the stories of both women and won’t be revealed until the end. Ambitiously constructed and written, intertextual, incorporating dozens of fragments composing a history of non-history, Destierros (Exiles) questions different realities—and the act of writing itself.
En la orilla de las cosas
Horacio se preguntaba «si acaso era posible con algunos versos expulsar del pecho los dolores, la pasión abrasadora o las cuitas». Este poemario de Gabriela Riveros muestra que las preguntas no cambian mucho. Que desde sus orígenes la pérdida, el dolor, y el deseo son una constante expresada de forma diversa. La poeta ha llegado al límite, y en la orilla se detiene para mirar, no el exterior que tiene a la vista, sino hacia dentro, en lo que es su vida íntima, voz cuya honestidad alcanza simas profundas de decepción y desilusión, de un pasado que no se puede cambiar: La poeta se siente asediada por una interioridad que alumbra las cosas, ahora bajo otra luz, otra edad, otra mirada.
Horacio wondered "if it was possible with some verses to expel pains, scorching passion or cares from the chest." This poem by Gabriela Riveros shows that the questions do not change much. That from its origins loss, pain, and desire are a constant expressed in a diverse way. The poet has reached the limit, and on the shore she stops to look, not the exterior she has in sight, but inward, in what is her intimate life, voice whose honesty reaches deep chasms of disappointment and disappointment, of a past that cannot be changed: The poet feels besieged by an interiority that illuminates things, now in another light, another age, another look.
Don Florencio de Polvorín y su prodigiosa profesión
Don Florencio vive en Polvorín de los Nogales acompañado por Musa, una perrita chihuahueña. A través de aventuras descubre que su profesión ha de ser la de bibliófilo, el que ama los libros. Así, don Florencio contagia a todos de su devoción por los libros y transforma la vida del pueblo entero.
A partir de una profunda solidaridad entre los miembros de una familia, de una comunidad pueblerina y de lectores del mundo entero se inicia una entrañable lucha por defender el derecho que tenemos todos a una vida más plena a través de la imaginación, las palabras y el acto de la lectura.
Don Florencio lives in Polvorín of the Nogales with Musa, a Chihuahua dog. Throughout his adventures he discovers that his profession has to be that of a bibliophile, the one who loves books. This is how Don Florencio spreads his devotion for books and transforms the lives of the entire town.
From a deep sense of solidarity among the members of the town’s families and the world’s readers, an endearing fight begins to defend the right we all have to live a fuller life through imagination, words and the act of reading.

Mi hermano Paco
Mientras Paco vivió en el Reino de los Cuerpos Distintos, Natalia, su hermana, lo acompañó con helado de pistache, disfraces, paletas gigantes, risas y chocolates en forma de balón. Paco regresa a casa justo el día de su cumpleaños, pero el gusto no le dura mucho a Natalia, ya que su hermano vuelve a desaparecer y ahora ella debe ir al Jardín de los Mil Obstáculos para rescatarlo y así mantener a salvo el secreto del Durmiente más sabio.
