Mónica Castellanos

(Monterrey, Nuevo León, 1960). Es egresada del Instituto Superior de Cultura y Arte de Monterrey.

Es cofundadora de la Editorial 42 líneas, del Centro de Estudios Familiares y Sociales, y conferencista. Desde el 2013 se dedica a lo que ha sido su mayor pasión: la creación literaria.

Entre su obra se encuentra Canasta de comadres, publicada por Azul editores en el 2015, Aquellas horas que nos robaron, el desafío de Gilberto Bosques, publicada bajo el sello Grijalbo en el 2018 y que obtuvo el premio Antonio García Cubas 2019, en la categoría de novela histórica. En el 2021 se publicó El aroma de los anhelos bajo el sello Grijalbo.

She was born in Monterrey, México (1960), and graduated from the Superior Institute of Culture and Arts of Monterrey.

She is cofounder of Editorial 42 líneas, Center of Familiar and Social Studies and speaker. Since 2013 she is dedicated to what has been her greatest passion: writing literature.

Among her work is Canasta de comadres, published by Azul Editores in 2015, Aquellas horas que nos robaron, el desafío de Gilberto Bosques, published by Grijalbo in 2018 and which in 2019 won the Antonio García Cubas Award, in the category of historical novel. Carbón rojo

Carmina habla con los muertos desde que era niña. Vive en un mundo de oscuridad donde el rencor y el deseo de venganza la han mantenido en la profundidad de una morada muerta, habitada por sentimientos tan negros como el carbón que se extrae en las minas de Coahuila.

En un mantel borda con hilo negro los nombres de la familia Calderón, a quienes detesta y de los que se ha vengado difundiendo chismes. Al centro resaltan las puntadas con las que ha bordado El Cura, un sacerdote del pasado que para ella no merece decir su nombre.

Al morir su hermana Ada, no tiene otra opción que volver al pasado, encontrarse con sus sobrinos nietos y tratar de reconstruir su historia. Por otro lado, la muerte de varios mineros en la mina Pasta de Conchos, despiertan en Bernardo, sobrino de Carmina, los recuerdos de la ausencia y la rabia de la injusticia que tratará de recomponer a través de su trabajo como periodista.

En esta novela, Mónica Castellanos reconstruye el viaje a los infiernos, ya sean los personales, como los de Carmina o del propio Bernardo, así como los de esos mineros que murieron por la negligencia de muchos y que, una vez más. quedaron sepultados en el olvido.

Carmina talks to the dead since she was a child. She lives in a world of darkness where the regret and the desire for her revenge kept her in the depths of a dead home, haunted by feelings as black as the coal that can be found in the mines of Coahuila.

In a mantel she embroiders with black hair the names of the Calderón family, who she hates. In the center of it, stands out the name El Cura, a priest from the past who for her it is not worth to even mention his name.

When her sister, Ada, dies, she has no other option than to turn to her past, meet up with her relatives, and try to reconstruct her story. On the other hand, the death of various miners in Pasta de Conchos bring up in Bernardo, Carmina's nephew, the memories of poverty and the anger of injustice that he will try to recompose through his work as a journalist.

In this novel, Mónica Castellanos retraces the journey to hell, including the personal ones, like Carmina's and Bernardo's, as well as those of the miners who died due to the negligence of many and who, once again, were buried in the shadows.

El aroma de los anhelos

Durante el porfiriato crece cada vez más el descontento de la población. Distintos grupos comienzan a organizarse para confrontar el presidente, entre ellos, el bando liderado por Francisco L. Madero. Los maderistas se situarán en distintos lugares de México y al sur de Estados Unidos, específicamente en San Antonio, Texas, punto clave para la lucha.

María, de tan sólo 15 años, es una joven con espíritu revolucionario que desea escapar de su condición social privilegiada para promover el voto femenino, participar en la política e iniciar una vida de entrega para los más necesitados. Las lecturas como Regeneración de los Flores Magón, Punto Rojo del poeta Práxedis G. Guerrero y Los miserables de Victor Hugo, le infundirán ese valor. Pero no será tarea fácil: la protección y las costumbres de su madre, aunadas a las restricciones de su género, la enfrentarán a diferentes obstáculos.

Sin embargo, el destino dará un vuelco cuando conoce a un joven doctor recién llegado a San Antonio, Daniel Chapman. Pronto, él se convertirá en confidente y amigo, ya que un poderoso lazo los unirá más allá de lo terrenal.

During the time of Porfirio Diaz’ rule, the population’s dissatisfaction and restlessness grew bigger and bigger. Different groups opposed to Diaz began to organize to challenge the president, among them, a group led by Francisco L. Madero. The “Maderistas” would then position themselves in different parts of Mexico and the southern United States, specifically in San Antonio, Texas, a key point for the fight.

The writings of Práxedis G. Guerrero published in the newspaper Regeneración and Les misérables, by Victor Hugo, would instill that audacity and drive in her. But it would not be an easy task: her mother’s care and social customs, together with the restrictions of being a woman, would make her face many different obstacles.

However, fate is turned upside down when she meets a young doctor who recently arrived in San Antonio, Daniel Chapman. Soon, he will become a confidant and friend, as a powerful bond will bind them together.
